Jumaah #2

Assalam alaikoum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh,

Bismillah….

I had something else in mind for this second Jumaah post but feltt that this is a more appropriate reminder for all of us insha Allah. If you have not heard yet .. Japan was hit by one of the worst earthquake in history today. Innalillahi wa lillahi rajiuun!

“The Hour will not be established until the earthquakes start to increase and become numerous.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaaree Kitaab al-Fitan 81/13)

Subhan Allah, one disaster after another! Recently, New Zealand too, was faced with similar catastrophe. The death toll is still climbing as we speak.. and this is just the recent natural disasters. How about the revolution that is taking place in the Middle East? Hundreds of our brothers and sisters have died in the process of eradicating their leaders. Innalillah wa illahi rajiuun

As we sit comfortably in our chairs and sleep peacefully in our beds at night, how certain are we that such calamity will not strike us when we least expect? Are we confident that when disaster does hit us, we prepared to face the possibility of death overcoming us? And, what have we done to prepare ourselves? We can build the tallest buildings with the best technology preventing any harm from reaching us but Allah mentioned in the Qur’an that:

‎”Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!” [4:78]

As I watched the news about Japan, it dawned on me how helpless we humans are. Cars, houses, roads, and even trains were swept away by the tsunami, leaving nothing in its path. What could the Japanese have possibly done except to watch everything being destroyed? La Hawla wala quwatta illah billah!

Ya Muslimeen, how much time left do we have in this Dunya? All these signs are a reminder of the Last Hour looming ahead of us and yet do we take heed? Or have we become so immuned to such news that we are not least bit affected or even reminded? Subhan Allah, calamities is Allah’s way of reminding us of His greatness and yet we choose to remain ignorant!

  1. Subhan Allah! It was this huge?! I got a breaking news alert email from the New York Times (I had subscribed to keep updated on the Middle East revolutions) about a tsunami hitting Japan, I haven’t read it yet, but I didn’t think the earthquake was of this magnitude!

“Or have we become so immuned to such news that we are not least bit affected or even reminded?”

This is so true!! Natural disasters are happening so frequently now, but we never really think that these are Signs from our Lord! That The Hour is coming! That we’re running out of time!!

I have to admit that I myself didn’t really give it a thought before the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. I always saw these horrible things happening to other people far away in the world and I didn’t really get the severity of Allah subhaanahu wa ta’aala’s punishment.

But when you see the Power of your Lord so close to home and realize that you were saved only and ONLY due to His Mercy, things rapidly change their perspectives.

We should never become complacent in our belief that such a thing won’t happen to us, because we don’t know when, where or how our Lord will see fit to test us or punish us.

I agree with you sis, we should take heed from these events, see them for what they really are and double our efforts! Because when the time comes when we ourselves might be swept away to our deaths, do we really want to be unprepared?

    • Subhan Allah.. yes sis, I was surprised when I watched the news about Japan. I’ve always thought that it was countries like Indonesia that was susceptible to such magnitude earthquakes considering their history of natural disasters.. We can never be certain that where we live is safe from such calamity :/

You know, when I saw that hadith about the increase in frequency of earthquakes as the Last Hour is approaching, my jaw almost dropped (ok exaggerate hehe). The warning has been given 1430 years ago and we only take heed when such event take place. La Hawla wala quwatta illah billah!

But when you see the Power of your Lord so close to home and realize that you were saved only and ONLY due to His Mercy, things rapidly change their perspectives.

Ya Allah.. yes, I never thought of it that way 😦 No calamity befalls on us because of His mercy and we should be thankful since we have time to reflect on ourselves before that time actually comes. Imagine being in the shoes of the Japanese, we would regret all the things said and done 😦 And true, we can never be too complacent because of possibly disaster occurring… so scary sis :/ We are given today and insha Allah tomorrow so it’s our duty to utilize our time.. like you said which “do we want to be unprepared”.. those who have died in the earthquake probably wished they had the time that we have right now! :((
