2012 – Day of Judgement? (a short perspective)

Assalam alaik wa Rahmatullaah wa Barakaatuh,

I was watching a documentary last week about this over-hyped Day of Judgement in 2012 and how there are some who have already started preparing themselves for it. Yes, as ridiculous as it sounds to us, people are indeed stocking up their daily provisions for the fateful day that is believed to end. Food, water, oxygen tanks, water filters, hideouts around their house, weapons to protect themselves from people who potentially become your enemies.. and this whole list of things that will supposedly protect them from death.

Subhan’Allah! Nothing can protect us from this inevitable day. Allah SWT has said in the Qur’an:

“Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!” [4:78]

There is this popular saying : you can run but you can’t hide, fits into this picture perfectly. Do they really think that they can outrun and overcome the Day of Judgement by using worldly resources to protect them? I recalled the story of Prophet Noah alayhi salam and his son when the water was rising. His son arrogantly turned down Prophet Noah’s offer of taking his ark by saying he is able to escape death by finding refuge on the highest hills which Prophet Noah could only shake his head as he knew there was no running away from Him.

As Muslims, we believe that knowledge of the Hour belongs to Him only. It is stated in the Qur’an:

People ask you concerning the Hour, say: “The knowledge of it is with Allah only. What do you know? It may be that the Hour is near!” [33:63]

Mayan predictions on the Day of Judgement have been proven wrong before and it confuses me as to why people still hold their beliefs to be true. The errors before should have already opened their eyes that 2012 could possibly be a false alarm as well. Allahu Mustaan..

Our preparation should not be towards a specific time or year as how some of the non-Muslims are doing. Instead, it is a daily struggle to improve ourselves and fight our nafs as death comes when we least expect. We prepare our deeds as provisions to be presented to Allah SWT and daily, we repent to Him for our sins lest we carry it along with us on this fateful Day.

May Allah keep our feet firmly to the ground in these trying times…
